Therapy notebook

One place for everything you want to bring to the person who follows you: unsent messages, reflections, session preparation and debrief.

What it's for

Between sessions things happen, thoughts come up, and sometimes you want to write to your therapist right away. The notebook collects everything by date and time, so nothing gets lost and you can bring it to the session.

  • Unsent messages. Write here what you'd like to send. Claude saves it exactly as it is and never sends it. If you like, rate how strong the urge to send it is, from 0 to 10.
  • Reflections to bring to the session, in your own words.
  • Let's prepare the session and let's take stock, before and after each session.
  • Fixed or variable sessions. If you like, preparation and debrief arrive on their own as scheduled tasks. With variable sessions they're scheduled one session at a time, and at the end of the debrief Claude asks when the next one is.

Claude

What would you like to call the person who follows you, in the notebook? And how often are your sessions: every week, every two weeks, or does it change each time?

You

Dr R. It changes each time: the next one is Thursday the 20th at 5 pm.

Claude

Do you have any agreements about contact between sessions?

You

We don't write to each other between sessions

Claude

I've created the notebook and written the agreement at the top. Would you like preparation and debrief to arrive on their own? For Thursday the 20th I suggest preparation at 10 am and debrief at 8 pm.

You

Yes

Claude

Scheduled, for Thursday the 20th only: at the end of the debrief I'll ask you when the following session is.

⚠️ At the end of a chat: entries made with “notebook:” and “reflection:” are saved right away; preparation and debrief are saved at the end.

Saved in your notebook at 18:42. It was not sent.

Would you like to note how strong the urge to send it is right now? From 0 to 10.

Claude

Good morning. Today at 5 pm you have your session with Dr R. Since the last session your notebook has one message and two reflections. If we pick one or two, which feels most important?

You

The one about going out on my own

Claude

How would you like to start talking about it? Try writing the first sentence you'd say, in your own words.

You

“I did something I hadn't done in three years.”

Claude

I'll prepare a reminder to keep on your phone. And after the session, if a strong emotion comes up, what would help?

You

A walk with the dog

Claude

I've added it to the reminder.

Claude

How did the session go? What did you talk about?

You

About being scared of going backwards. She says steps back are part of the journey.

Claude

What do you take home, in your own words?

You

That one bad day doesn't erase the progress

Claude

I've saved it like that. Last question: when is the next session?

You

Wednesday the 26th at 4 pm

Claude

I've scheduled preparation on Wednesday the 26th at 9 am and debrief at 7 pm.

Something useful for your record came up in the debrief: shall I update it?

Here's your notebook. If you use tags, you can see just the entries on one topic, for example with “search #family”.

The notebook saves itself, entry by entry: no command needed.

What gets saved

  • therapy-notebook.md: one list, by date and time. Every entry has a tag: #message, #reflections, #to-say-in-session, #after-session.
  • At the top, your agreements with your therapist, for example “we don't contact each other between sessions”.
  • In your record (section 0): session frequency, next session and scheduled tasks.

At the end of a chat: entries made with “notebook:” and “reflection:” are saved right away. Preparation and debrief are saved at the end: if you need to close before, ask Claude to save what you've done.
